JOHN McCOY

John McCoy's "Unreal: The Anthology"
Out now on AngelAir Records!

When this latest chapter of McCoy/ Torme collaborations started we didn't really know where it would end up....we just started writing songs together again and found something I for one had lost touch with, an unspoken empathy and connection in our playing, songwriting and outlook.

Maybe not so surprising, we've known each other since the mid seventies(!) when I joined Bernies band SCRAPYARD (third member was the infamous powerhouse drummer ROGER HUNT ). I had just previously been working with my afro/jazz/rock ensemble ZZEBRA, had a quick affair with CURVED AIR, but when I first heard Bernie playing that beaten up Strat I was hooked, and he still reaches the parts that other guitar players only mimic! ...He,s the real McCoy!

G.M.T. is in many ways a return to the raw three piece rock band of that first encounter, but so much more, it's real , it's natural, it's different, it's fun,............really it's the same old racket we always made!...
The bonus is, Bernie has developed as a singer and now stands alongside some of the best, and let's face it we have worked with some quite good ones! (IAN GILLAN, OZZY OSBOURNE, DEE SNIDER, JOEY BELLADONNA, NICKY MOORE, ARTHUR GUITAR, PHIL LEWIS, RAY GILLEN, COSMO TOONS, the list goes on...)
So here we are .......G.M.T.

Well this is mad ....I've always wanted to write reviews of my own band!

I couldn't be happier with the band or the album, the way that things just fell into place..
I was at Bernie's working on some songs when a phone call came through asking if we'd like to make an appearance at a charity bash in aid of CLIVE BURRS CLIVEAID CHARITY. Coincidentally the drummer in Bernie's studio that day was ROBIN GUY who also knew the IRON MAIDEN drummer.
We agreed to go and bash out a few tunes a few days later.....it was a great occasion and we were asked that night by a promoter if we would like to appear at the CELTIC WARRIORS annual Bikefest.
We said yes .....and then realised we'd have to get a set together!.....It was already a band, we were so lucky to have come together in this fatalistic way.....man.
ROBIN GUY has worked with people as diverse as BRUCE DICKINSON, MARTIN GRECH. ALL ABOUT EVE, THE BUSINESS,etc etc....without even realising it and with apparent ease, he encompasses some traits of the great drummers into his own unique style, from SPIKE JONES to JOHN BONHAM, FROM GINGER BAKER to KEITH MOON, IAN PAICE to STIX HOYPOLLOY, all brought bang up to date in this ANIMAL with a leopardskin haircut and a wide grin. If you like drummers as I do, you must see this GUY!.........

So anyway: we did the Bikefest playing inbetween WISHBONE ASH and Oliver/Dawson SAXON ...............we ambled on, introduced by the legendary DUMPY as:

"Ladies and Gentlemen!" (squints down at his scrap of paper to remind himself what we're called)
"Please Welcome....THE GAY MCCOY TORMES!!!!"
Nice.
So we started playing, the place started rocking and they couldn't stop us. It was a truly momentous occasion for us, because it was at that point that the penny dropped and we realised we'd better go and record something quick. ....famous last words!

It seems to have taken forever! We all had other commitments to wind down and in fact are still doing so ahead of what hopefully is going to be a busy live schedule....because the albums brilliant, believe me, but this is one hell of a live band!

we've done a few video tracks as you've probably noticed...well theres more on the way.....GILLAN fans will be interested to know that COLIN TOWNS has played keyboards on a few tracks for us...it was great to be working together again and he's done his usual superb job, adding another dimension here and there to what is mainly a guitar/bass/drums album.......

well even I'm getting bored now so thats that for now. Please make contact ,let us know what you think, book us for your wedding reception,

cheers John McCoy.
